Obituary

SALISBURY- H. George Zeibel, 93, of Salisbury, died Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury. He was born in Olwein, Iowa, a son of the late Anthony G. and Ida Heyder Zeibel. George earned his B.S. degree at Penn State University in 1942 before being drafted into the US Army. He attended officer's school in Edgewood, Maryland where he was quickly commissioned to 2nd Lieutenant. With the Army he traveled to many places and was sent to Melbourne, Australia, Calcutta, India then onto Darjeeling, India. His later assignments took him from Ledo Road to Burma Road to Kun-ming, China and when the war ended, he and many other officers were sent to Shanghai. He was a member of VFW Post 6732 in Clover, South Carolina. Following his release from active duty he worked in the poultry feed industry until retirement in 1978. He was good working with his hands and proudly built his own seawall at his home along the river, piecing it together by hand, one stone at a time. He is survived by his wife, Mary Florence Zeibel; a son, Joseph G. Zeibel and his wife, Elizabeth of Clover, South Carolina; grandchildren, Dr. Jason George Zeibel and his wife, Audra of Ft. Belvior, Virginia, Michael Smith of Deep Creek, West Virginia and Jamie Smith of Glen Burnie, Maryland; a step-son, Lloyd Edward Smith and his wife, Peggy of Boones Mill, Virginia; and a great granddaughter, Celia. As the youngest of eight children, his seven sisters preceded him in death. A memorial service with military honors will be held at a later date at the VFW Post 6732 in Clover.
