SEAFORD- Grace E. Hastings, 87, of Seaford, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, May 12, 2014, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on Christmas Day in Seaford, Delaware, a daughter of the late Edgar and Helen Jefferson. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband, William I. Hastings, who passed in 2013. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Oak Grove and a former, long- time member of Blades United Methodist Church. Grace grew up on a farm where she learned the value of hard work which continued throughout her life. She was a wonderful cook and homemaker, who took pride in her family and her home. Baking was certainly her specialty and she was well known for her blueberry and cherry pies, chicken and dumplings, yeast rolls, sweet potato biscuits, and her homemade ice cream. For her family, she made their favorite ice cream each year on their birthday, a tradition that will always be remembered. She enjoyed working with her hands and made beautiful wreaths and flower arrangements for holidays and church services. She had a knack for being fashionable and always made sure her hair and clothes were perfect. For many years, her family would grow and sell produce at the produce stand in front of their home. Her produce was always in high demand because she remained particular about the fruits and vegetables they sold, always making sure they were fresh and without a blemish. Her beloved dog, "Rascal", who preceded her in death, held a special place in her heart. She is survived by 4 children, James Hitchens (Marie) of Dover, Denise Buchanon (Jay) of Bartow, FL, Bart Hastings (Debby) of Seaford and Karen Kay Ayotte (Bob) of Salisbury; grandchildren, Dorothy and Susan Hitchens, Travis Buchanon, Holly Morris, Reagan Bow, Benjamin and Luke Hastings, Heather Preston, Ian and Connor Ayotte; and nine great grandchildren; several brothers and sisters including Louise King, James Jefferson, and Jennie Lee Maurer. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church in Oak Grove. The Reverend Charles Kind will officiate. Following the service, friends are invited to join the family in the community hall of the church for a time of food and fellowship. Arrangements are being handled by Short Funeral Home in Delmar. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.shortfh.com.
