George W. Sparrow, Jr., 84, passed away on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. Born in Delmar on April 7, 1924, he was a son of the late George W. and Lucy Sparrow. George attended Delmar High School until the 11th grade, and then graduated from Randolph-Macon Military Academy in Front Royal, VA. He proudly served his country in the US Army during World War II in the Calvary during the China, Burma & India Campaign. George worked for his father at G.W. Seed & Feed Store in Delmar until it's closing in 1958. He then went to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central and most recently Conrail, from which he retired in 1987. He was a long time member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Delmar; a member of the Delmar V.F.W., Post 8276; Past Master of the Masonic Lodge in Delmar; a member of the HAM Radio Association (KA30TL); a member of the Delaware Master Gardener's Association in Georgetown; and a member of the Thresherman's Steam & Gas Association. He enjoyed his duties as a blacksmith at Furnace Town in Snow Hill and composting and organic gardening were some of his favorite interests. He is survived by his wife of sixty two years, Elizabeth Sparrow of Delmar; two daughters, Beverly Sparrow Michelsen and her husband Ed of Delmar and Beth R. Wilson and her husband Greg of Fruitland; a granddaughter, Melissa Scarborough and her husband, Bob, and their children, Stephanie, Michaela, Brianna, Tori, Bradley and Rachel; two step grandsons, Brian Wilson of Boise, Idaho and Paul Wilson of Chesapeake, VA; 8 step great grandchildren; a sister, Genevieve Elliott of Mardela Springs; a brother, John L. "Jack" Sparrow of Delmar and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Sparrow, who passed in 1944. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, May 9, 2008 from 7:00 to 8:30 at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, with a Masonic Service to be held at 8:00. The funeral service will be held Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church, 10th & Grove Streets in Delmar. The Reverend Custer Ruley will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow the services at St. Stephen's Cemetery Park in Delmar.
