Obituary

DELMAR- George William "Bill" Davis, 68 of Delmar, died Saturday, August 22, 2015 after a long, courageous battle with several illnesses. He was a true fighter who never wanted to give up. He was born December 2, 1946 in Salisbury, a son of the late George William Davis and Evelyn Morris Davis. Bill spent his whole life in Delmar and was extremely proud of his Delmar Heritage. He graduated from Delmar High with the class of 1966, where he was a member of the 1965 Henlopen Conference Championship football team. He worked for the DuPont Co. in Seaford and retired after 31 years of service. He was an honorary member of the Delmar Fire Department, where he earned his nickname, "Buckets." He was an avid race fan and for many years enjoyed the Delmar races. He also followed NASCAR and always rooted for anyone driving a Ford and enjoyed riding his motorcycle. Bill was a regular at the Railroad Café and a member of the roundtable group. He was also a long time member of St. Stephen's United Methodist Church in Delmar. Bill is remembered as a great friend to many who always had a knack for making others smile and a proud grandfather whose grandson was the light of his life. He is survived by his wife of over 21 years, Sandy (Nichols) Davis; a son, Richard Davis of Durham, NC; a daughter, Faith Higbee and husband, Billy of Delmar; a grandson, Jeffrey Melvin of Delmar; a brother, Bobby Davis of Florida; and a sister, Barbara Snyder and husband, Dale of Delmar. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sons, Jeffrey William Davis, Daniel William Davis and Jody Reid. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 27, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Stephen's United Methodist Church in Delmar, where family and friends may call from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Reverend Phyllis Walton will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to St. Stephen's United Methodist Church, 101 E. State Street, Delmar, DE 19940. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home in Delmar.
