DELMAR- Gene E. Cooper, Sr., 70, of Delmar, died Thursday, February 5, 2015 at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. He was born August 7, 1944 in Willards, a son of the late James Wesley Cooper and Jeanette Evelyn (Truitt) Cooper. Gene had a strong work ethic and worked for many years as a truck driver and mechanic for Central Penn. He was a gifted mechanic who worked on stock cars and dragsters in his free time. He loved playing softball, was an avid Redskins and O's fan and rooted hard for Jeff Gordon through the years. He and his late wife, Sandra, enjoyed camping at Roaring Point for many years. They considered their friends at the campground their extended family. Gene looked after his friends there and was always willing to lend a hand when someone needed help with something. He worked at Roaring Point through the summers and when not working could often be found in his favorite fishing spot. He is survived by 2 sons, Gene E. Cooper, Jr and his companion, Christine Evans of Salisbury and Jimmy A. Cooper of Parsonsburg; a brother, James Leon "Toby" Cooper of Delmar; sisters, Mary Frances Timmons and husband, Frank of Salisbury and Joan Evelyn Rickards of Parsonsburg; 2 grandchildren, Gene Cooper III of Hebron and Michelle Purnell of Mardela Springs. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Sandra Jean Riley Cooper. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, where family and friends may call from 12:00 to 1:00. The family requests casual attire.
