Foster Calvin Hess, 82, of Mardela Springs, MD, formerly of Glen Burnie, died Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury with his loving family by his side. He was born May 30, 1929 in Martinsburg, West Virginia, a son of the late Amos and Dorothy Hess. Mr. Hess worked as an inspector for GM at the Bruening Highway plant in Baltimore, a career that spanned 39 years. He was also a member of the United Auto Workers Union for 60 years. His career fueled his love for automobiles and NASCAR racing. He was very good with his hands and enjoyed repairing and refurbishing used lawnmowers. He loved the outdoors and was especially fond of fishing and camping. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Gladys C. Hess; 7 children, Linda Diane Baker and her husband, Lee of Ocean Pines, Mary Lou Cwalina and her husband, Frank of Stevensville, Shirley Rae Juettner and her husband, Peter of Stevensville, Pamela Fay Hess of Columbus, Ohio, Foster Hess Jr. and his wife, Janice of Salisbury, Ronald Hess and his wife, Hope of Parksley, VA and Stephen Wayne Hess and his wife, Jennifer of Arnold; 3 step children, Roland Joseph Stader of Pasadena, Linda Zuck and her husband, Harry of Linthicum, MD and Gail Ann Kroedel and her husband, David of Glen Burnie, MD; 17 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Garland Hess and Terry Hess, both of Martinsburg, West Virginia; 2 sisters, Doris Nicholson of Charlestown, West Virginia and Mary Anne Busey and her husband, Don of Martinsburg, West Virginia; and a sister-in-law, Virginia Hess of West Virginia. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Amos Hess, Jr. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Home, Delmar, where family and friends may call from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. The Reverend Howard Travers will officiate.
