DELMAR- Evelyn H. Hearn, 87, of Delmar, died Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at her home in Delmar, surrounded by her loving family. She was born July 30, 1927 in Delmar, a daughter of the late Granville and Maude Niblett Hastings. In her younger days Evelyn worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for R.D. Grier before leaving to raise her family and tend to the chickens with her husband. In addition to raising chickens, they also raised hogs. She was a long time active member of Melson United Methodist Church, where she served as Sunday School teacher, MYF leader, President of the United Methodist Women and took many trips to Camp Pecometh with the MYF. She was an excellent cook and was well known for her homemade chicken and dumplings. She enjoyed sewing and quilting and loved sharing her works with her family and friends. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who cherished special time spent with her family, and especially loved doing things with her grandchildren. She is survived by daughters, Sandra L. Hearn of Wilmington and Lynn H. Lenderking of Harrington; grandchildren, Tammy Brown, Cheri Marshall and her husband. Josh and Josh Gordy; and 3 great grandchildren, Lexi, Taylor and Lauren Marshall. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Hearn, who passed in 1995; a son, Glen H. Hearn, who passed in 1973; a son-in-law, Charles Lenderking; and a brother, William Hastings. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, December 5, 2014 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 at Short funeral Home in Delmar, and also on Saturday from 12:00 to 1:00 at Melson United Methodist Church, followed by a service at the church which begins at 1:00. The Reverend John O. Oltman will officiate. Interment will follow in Melsons Cemetery.
