Obituary

Eunice (nee Ellis) Phillips died on December 11, 2011 in her 99th year. Although a long-time resident of Salisbury, she had been at the Kutz Home in Wilmington, Delaware since 2010. Mrs. Phillips was born in Millsboro, Delaware on January 24, 1912 and spent her youth at Elliston Farm in Delmar, Delaware. She graduated from University of Delaware in 1932, and began work on a master's degree, taking classes at the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel. Subsequently, she accepted a position as a home economist in Salisbury with Eastern Shore Public Service, now known as Delmarva Power. She often conducted cooking schools in many of the towns in her territory, which stretched from the mid-Shore to Onancock, Virginia. In 1937 she married Bennett Phillips; and the couple had two daughters, Jeannie Phillips Moran of Baltimore, Maryland and Carol Phillips Robinson of Wilmington, Delaware. She is also survived by three granddaughters, Crystal Everly of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, April Wright of Seacane, Pennsylvania and Nicole Moran of Baltimore, Maryland. There are three great grandchildren, Rachel Everly, Aidan Everly and Bradley Wright. In her second career, Mrs. Phillips was a social worker for the Wicomico County Department of Social Services from 1962 until her retirement in 1977. She often commented on her good fortune to have had two employment positions in her life that were so meaningful to her. Following her retirement, Mrs. Phillips was involved in community projects as well as personal pursuits. She was director of Sunday school and treasurer at Old Saint Paul's Episcopal Church in Hebron, Maryland, for several years. She was a member of the Wicomico County Humane Society and also contributed regularly to a local feral cat project. Over the years Mrs. Phillips rescued several cats and dogs who became her faithful companions. She was an avid reader, with a particular penchant for suspense novels. Traveling was of keen interest, in particular visiting all the major national parks and making numerous jaunts to New York's theatre district. For an 86th birthday present, she spent a grand afternoon at the Kentucky Derby. A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 16, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Old St. Paul's Church (Spring Hill) on Route 50 in Hebron, Maryland. Friends may call on the family in the church an hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Firemen's Cemetery in Sharptown, Maryland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Wicomico County, 5130 Citation Drive, Salisbury, MD 21804. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home in Delmar.
