Obituary

It is with a mix of sorrow and gratitude that we announce the passing of Ernest Ray Carbaugh, Sr., affectionately known as Ernie, who left us peacefully on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at the age of 93. Ernie was born on March 5, 1932, in Thurmont, Maryland, the last surviving of 12 children of the late Ernest Harvey and Arita Brice Carbaugh, carrying the legacy of a close-knit family that valued love and hard work. Ernie dedicated his life to his craft, establishing himself as a talented mechanic and builder in the home improvement industry. He operated E.R. Carbaugh & Sons, working diligently on projects and transforming homes for friends and neighbors, a testament to his strong work ethic and commitment to excellence. Remarkably, he continued to work until the age of 88, a reflection of his passion and resilience. An active community member, Ernie served with pride as a past member of the Hebron Volunteer Fire Department. He had a zest for life that extended beyond his labor; he embraced the beauty of the outdoors, relishing in hunting and fishing adventures. Ernie's love for local stock car racing and NASCAR ignited the thrill-seeking spirit within him, and he found joy in the melodies of bluegrass and old-time country music. Ernie is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Ellen Mae (Parsons) Carbaugh; their sons, Ernest Carbaugh, Jr. and Michael Carbaugh and companion, Dana Basner; and their daughter, Jenny Lee; cherished grandchildren, Colby, Aaron, Morgan, Camryn, Alexis, Paul and Jeffrey; great grandchildren, Gabriel, Bentley and Madison; brother-in-law, David Parsons and wife, Rita; sisters-in-law, Mary Williams and husband, Jesse and Nancy Parsons; and a special niece, Bobbi Sue. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. His family will forever cherish the memories of his laughter, wisdom, and the love they shared. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 11 siblings; brother-in-law, Larry Parsons; and in-laws, Harry and Bessie Parsons. A celebration of Ernie's life will take place on Saturday, July 19, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, followed by a memorial service beginning at 2:00. Ernie's family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses, chaplains and staff of Coastal Hospice for the love and care given to him during his last weeks and days. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Ernie to Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home in Delmar.
