Obituary

DELMAR- Elwood C. Massey, 88 of Delmar, and formerly of Laurel, died Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury, surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 16, 1928 in Monmouth, New Jersey, a son of the late John and Helen Massey. After graduating from high school he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. After his discharge from the Army he spent many years as a proofreader for the U.S. Government Printing Office in Washington, D.C. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 19 in Laurel. Elwood will be remembered as a kind-hearted and fun-loving father, grandfather and friend to many and never met a stranger. He was a jokester and even up until his final days would do anything to make people laugh. His smile was infectious and he was always there for family and friends, whatever their need. He enjoyed walking and for many years walked 3 miles a day, 5 days a week. Elwood also had a fondness for casinos and his Chic-fil-A group of friends, who were like his second family. Mr. Massey will be sorely missed. He is survived by his children, Joan Koshkin (Bruce) of Georgia, Sue Nero (Richard) of Florida, Jimmy Massey (Maggie) of Seaford and Debbie Massey of Virginia; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; two sisters; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters and his friend and companion, Jerry Hudson. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, where a visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Pastor George Smith will officiate. Interment will follow the services at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Laurel. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home in Delmar.
