Elmer Carlton "Carl" Anderton, 88, of Harbeson, passed away Thursday, July 18, 2013 at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. He was born in Hallwood, Virginia, a son of the late Carlton and Ruth Anderton. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard as a landing craft operator during WW II in the Pacific Theater during the invasion of Okinawa. Carl was a member of the Seaford Moose Lodge and the Blades Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. He enjoyed cooking and serving meals at the dinners at the Blades Fire Department, Asbury U.M. Church in Sharptown, and the Seaford Moose Lodge. He was a car enthusiast and enjoyed going to various car shows. During his life, he and his father owned Anderton Marine Transportation in Salisbury. He held a license for a Master Pilot of Steam and Motor Vessels of the Chesapeake Bay and was also a tugboat captain. He would haul aggregates and corn to Delaware, Maryland and Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine P. "Gerdy" Anderton; his children, Judy L. Twilley (David) of Parsonsburg, Carl L. Anderton (Josephine) of Salisbury, Edward L. Anderton (Jeanne) of Hebron, Barbara L. Schul (Don) of Princess Anne, Donald L. Anderton (Linda) of Salisbury, and Michelle L. Hill (Robert) of Parsonsburg; step-children, Gregory A. Taylor (Roxanne) of Sharptown, and Debbie L. Busby (fiancé, Dennis Bounds) of Delmar; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; four step-great grandchildren; a sister, Betty Lee Anderton Simon of Burlington, NC; a step-sister, Vickie Collins of Atlanta, Georgia; a sister-in-law, Ivalee Wheatley of Sharptown; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Julia Rae Lewis Anderton; and his step-mother, Juanita Anderton. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. at the Short Funeral Home in Delmar. Family and friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Reverend James Penuel will officiate. Interment will follow at Springhill Memory Gardens in Hebron.
