Edwin "Ed" H. Guthrie, age 80, of Girdletree, died Thursday, April 30, 2009 at his home in Girdletree. He was born July 19, 1928 in Salisbury, a son of the late Julia Guthrie Beauchamp. Ed proudly served his country in the U.S. Army for 2 tours, and served during the Korean Conflict. He was responsible for managing a medic corps in the Army and trained at Walter Reed Hospital. He then left the medic corps to run a communication section, where he began his training in electronics. He was an active member of American Legion Post 67 in Snow Hill for over 55 years and a member of Bates Memorial United Methodist Church in Snow Hill. He retired in 1991 as a Sergeant for the Worcester County Sheriff's Department, after more than 20 years, where he was fondly known as "Pop-Pop". After retirement, he continued to work on a contractual basis for the Sheriff's Department maintaining their radios, electronic equipment and computers. He loved riding his Honda Gold Wing and cherished the memories of the many motorcycle trips he took with family and friends. He was a diehard country music fan. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Adkins Guthrie, whom he married on June 18, 1954; a son, Ed Guthrie and his wife, Connie of Elkton; a daughter, Sherry Lauer and her husband, Larry of Girdletree; a granddaughter, Julie Lauer of Girdletree; and a sister, Amanda Louise Reid and her husband, Wade of South Carolina. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 4, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Bates Memorial United Methodist Church in Snow Hill, where family and friends may call from 1:00 to 2:00. The Reverends Kenneth D. Elligson and Mark A. Avens will officiate. Interment will be private at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Coastal Hospice, P.O.
