Obituary

SALISBURY- Dorothy "Miss Dottie" Figgs Matthews, 72, of Salisbury, died Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury after a long, brave battle with leukemia. She was born September 1, 1938 in Philadelphia, a daughter of Annie G. Figgs of Melson's, Maryland and the late Lacey Kenney Figgs. "Miss Dottie," as she was affectionately known to many, worked as a secretary for the Wicomico Board of Education for three years following high school graduation. She then took a secretarial position at Campbell's Soup in Quality Control. After a few years she was promoted to the position of secretary to the plant manager. She left Campbell's Soup to raise her family and for many years cherished her position as a self-called "domestic engineer." A highlight of her life was the memories made during the family's camping trips, which usually coincided with Steam and Gas Shows and flea markets. She was especially fond of their trips to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. She was a real people person and enjoyed traveling with the AARP Somerset County Travel Group, where she had developed many friendships through the years. She is survived by her beloved husband of 53 years, Alfred Thomas Matthews, III; two sons, Russell Matthews of Salisbury and Anthony Matthews of Delmar; a brother, Lacey K. Figgs and his wife, Joyce of Delmar; a niece, Kim Figgs of Delmar; a nephew, Donnie Figgs of Laurel; and a cousin, Roslyn Lanham of Salisbury. A committal service will be held in the chapel of the Eastern Shore Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 6827 East New Market Ellwood Road, Hurlock, Maryland, 21643 on Monday, May 16, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Maryland Chapter, 11350 McCormick Rd, Executive Plaza III, Suite 100, Hunt Valley, MD 21031 or to the Cancer Support Community of Delmarva, 1506 S. Salisbury Blvd, Salisbury, MD 21801. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home in Delmar. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.shortfh.com
