Obituary

Dorothy "Dot" L. Morris, of Salisbury, formerly of Delmar, died Monday, June 10, 2013 at the Village at Harbor Pointe. She was born August 28, 1927 in Wilmington, a daughter of the late Carlton H. Lyons and Ruth E. Lecates Lyons. Dot retired in 1982 from the US Postal Service, as Postmaster of the Delmar Post Office where she worked for 27 years. Prior to her postal career she had been office secretary at the Delmar Elementary School. She was a long time member of Mt. Olive United Methodist Church and St. Stephen's United Methodist Church in Delmar. Before the merger of the two churches she served as church treasurer and Sunday School teacher for Mt. Olive. She was a member of VFW Post 8276 Ladies Auxiliary, the Salisbury Elks Club Auxiliary, the O.C. Golf & Country Club and the Happy Timers and Red Hatters clubs. She spent over 2500 hours volunteering at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. She loved spending summers at her beach home in Ocean City where she enjoyed watching the people on the boardwalk. She was an avid golfer, reader and gardener as well. She is survived by her daughter, Dru Vanderwende (Ben) of Salisbury; a grandson, Joe Vanderwende (Lori) of Annapolis; 3 great grandchildren, Kyrsten, Marley and Brad (Heather); and 2 great –great grandchildren, Taylor and Ben; a brother, Carlton "Sonny" H. Lyons (Janet) of Fenwick Island; nephews, Keith Lyons (Nancy) and Wayne Lyons; and several great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William "Buzz" A. Morris, who passed in 1978; a granddaughter, Caryn Vanderwende, who passed in 2006; and a half-sister, Ida Breasure. A graveside service will be held at St. Stephen's Cemetery in Delmar on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Stephen's Cemetery in Delmar. Pastors Phyllis Walton and Janelle Beiler will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to St. Stephen's United Methodist Church, 101 E. State Street, Delmar, DE 19940 or Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home in Delmar.
