LAUREL- Dorothy Jean Breeding, 79, of Laurel, died Thursday, August 9, 2018 at her home after a brief illness. She was born March 7, 1939 in Laurel, a daughter of the late John and Helen Lewis Massey. Dorothy retired in 1991 after over 15 years of service as a custodian at Laurel High School. After retirement she wanted to remain active, so she went to work cleaning houses for several folks. She was a life member of Kings United Methodist Church in Laurel where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. Spending time with family was a priority for Dorothy. She was a wonderful cook and loved to share her homemade chicken and dumplings with family and friends and hosting family dinners. She will be remembered for her unwavering love for ice cream and passed that trait on to her children and grandchildren. She is survived by a daughter, Cathy Hill and her significant other, Doug Lewis of Laurel; a son, Ben Hastings and his wife, Carol of Laurel; grandchildren, James Hastings of Dagsboro, Chris Hastings and his wife, Brandi of Laurel and Jennifer Neal and her husband, Shawn of Seaford; great grandchildren, Desi, Jordan, Leah, Alyssa, Zach, Hannah and Kaitlyn; a great-great granddaughter, Lilly; a sister, Mary Kennedy of Laurel; a stepdaughter; 2 stepsons; and several step grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Breeding; brothers, Jim Massey, Elwood Massey, Johnny Massey, Pete Massey and Ed Massey; and a sister, Bea Applegate. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, where family and friends may call from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00. The Reverend Ruth Tull will officiate. Interment will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Laurel. Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home in Delmar.
