Doris E. Burton, 93, of Laurel, died Sunday, October 9, 2011 at Seaford Center- Genesis Eldercare, where she had been a resident for the past 2 1/2 years. She was born August 12, 1918 in Delmar, a daughter of the late Norman and Flora Hearn Elliott. Doris' love for sewing was used in her work for many years as a seamstress for the former Banks and Pusey Garment Factory in Delmar. Her church and her family were her life. She thoroughly enjoyed her grandchildren. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Delmar for 63 years where she served in various capacities through the years, such as Sunday school teacher, mission work and GA (Girls in Action.) Memberships also included the Broad Creek Grange in Laurel and the Laurel Senior Center. She appreciated nature and gardening was a favorite hobby. She is survived by a son, David Allen Burton and his wife, Joyce of Delmar; a daughter, Nancy Calloway of Seaford; 4 grandchildren, David Allen Burton, Jr. and his wife, Jill of Delmar, Marla Dickerson and her husband, Rick of Laurel, Ellen Schwinn and her husband, Mike of Pittsville and Kelly Elizabeth Burton of Delmar; and 11 great grandchildren, Kelsey, Wade, Rachel, Josh, Emma, Nathan, Sarah, Laura, Reid, Shelby and Colby. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Francis Burton, who passed January 30, 1989; and 3 brothers, Fred, Byard and Charles Ellliott. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, where family and friends may call from 1:00 to 2:00. Pastor Lee Hughart will officiate. Interment will follow the services at St. Stephen's Cemetery in Delmar. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to First Baptist Church of Delmar, P.O. Box 200, Delmar, DE 19940.
