With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Deborah S. Hughes, affectionately known to her friends and family as Debbie, who departed this life peacefully on Monday, December 23, 2024, at the age of 74. Born on February 27, 1950, in Cambridge, Maryland, Debbie lived a vibrant life, where she was known for her infectious laughter and her ability to light up any room. Her carefree spirit and love for fun made her the life of the party—whether she was celebrating with friends or simply sharing a laugh with a loved one. One of her simple pleasures was enjoying a cold Pepsi, which she savored while chatting with those close to her. She had a way of making everyone feel special, calling them "Sweetie." Debbie also had a soft spot for her beloved cat, Oreo. She will forever be remembered for her beautiful smile and uplifting personality. She is survived by her son, Brad Lewis; grandchildren, Shauna Hurley (Joel), Denay Lucas, Ariana Lucas, Darrian Lucas, Ashton Lucas and Savannah Lewis; great-grandchildren, Taliah Brown, Desmond Brown, Jr., and Aliana Pettiford; sister, Linda Powell, brother, Larry Hughes; niece, Shelley Foxwell (Wes); nephew, Shawn Powell (Christine) and longtime special friend, Randell Matney and his family. She was preceded in death by her mother, Marie Andrews Wheatley; father, Charles Hughes, Jr; daughter, Angela Lucas; and grandson, Brody Lewis. Debbie's life will be celebrated with a memorial service at Short Funeral Home in Delmar on Monday, December 30, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. where her family and friends will share memories and honor the legacy she leaves behind.
