Obituary

Pocomoke City- Calvin W. Hood, 81, of Pocomoke City, died Wednesday August 28, 2013 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, due to complications from prostate cancer and congestive heart failure. He was born November 3, 1931 in Zebulon, North Carolina, a son of the late Edward and Nellie T. Hood. Calvin proudly served his country in the US Air Force in the early 1950's. After his discharge he went to work as a Senior Systems Engineer for NSA, a job he retired from after 37 years of service. After retirement he worked for a several years in the information technology field. Following this he worked at River Run Golf Course in Berlin for several years. He was a very active member of Bates Memorial United Methodist Church in Snow Hill, where he served as Trustees Chairman for many years amongst other things. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed his long time membership with his golf group- the "Clowns". They played various group tournaments throughout the years in various places. He enjoyed gardening as well. Calvin was very supportive of his wife's decision to take classes in the Methodist Conference to become a Lay Speaker and Certified Lay Minister and supported her in her ministry at Charity United Methodist Church in Salisbury. He enjoyed helping as her secretary with bulletins, newsletters and similar tasks. He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Pastor Janet K. Hood; 3 daughters, Deborah Weakley (Roger) of Laurel, Pamela Thomas (Greg) of Bristow, VA and Deanne Waynick of Key West, Florida; 8 grandchildren, Devin Hood and Curtis Hood, Erin Nicole Weakley, Kelsey Thomas and Ryan Thomas, Courtney Hood, Davis Hood and Rachel Hood; 3 great grandchildren; a brother, Edward E. Hood, Jr. (Kay) of North Carolina; a sister, Nancy Lou Taylor (Ralph) of Washington, DC; a sister-in-law, Jocelyn Van Gelder (Duane) of S. Butler, NY; and his 2 beloved dogs, "Scruffy" and "Teddy Bear". In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Hood; 2 sons, Curtis Hood and Calvin Hood, Jr.; and a sister, Ann P. Hood. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, September 2, 2013 from 7:00 pm. to 8:30 at the Short Funeral Home in Delmar. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Bates Memorial United Methodist Church in Snow Hill, where family and friends may also call from 10:00 to 11:00. The Reverend Jim Doran will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at Bates Memorial Cemetery.
