Obituary

Billy C. Hastings, 81, of Laurel, died Friday, January 9, 2009 at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford. He was born January 6, 1928 in Delmar, a son of the late Norman and Gladys (Hastings) Sirman. Billy proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict in the US Army. He was a life member of the American Legion, Post 19 in Laurel. Billy owned and operated Hastings Exxon service station in Laurel for 21 years, priding himself on the service he gave and the friendships he made there. After leaving the service station business, he worked for Pepsi for 25 years as a truck driver and warehouse supervisor, retiring at age 75. Fishing was a hobby he enjoyed when not working or spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty M. (Carey) Hastings; three sons, Alvin L. Hastings of Middletown, Delaware, Ronald C. Hastings and his wife, Shelley of Elkton, Maryland and Kenneth A. Hastings and his wife, Yvonne of Branson, Missouri; a daughter, Cynthia F. Hughes and her husband, John of Glen Burnie, Maryland; ten grandchildren, Richard Hastings Dina Burge, Skitch Hastings, Eli Hastings, Daisy Shook, Heather Tiff, Trad Hastings, Emily Hastings, Molly Hastings and Nicole Gorospe; seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Messick of Delmar and Shirley Masten of Seaford; and a brother, Jack Sirman of Texas. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, where family and friends may call from 12:00 to 2:00. The Reverend Dale Evans will officiate. Interment will follow the services at St. Stephen's Cemetery in Delmar.
