Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara H. Taylor, a cherished member of the Salisbury community, who left us on Friday, June 12, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on September 8, 1933, Barbara was the daughter of the late Roland and Mary (Majors) Tawes and proudly spent her entire life in Salisbury, where she also graduated from Wicomico High School.

Barbara was a remarkable woman whose priorities centered around her family, friends, and community. As a young child, her and her sister Gertrude had a singing group "The Tawes Sisters" and they sang on the radio in the late 30's and 40's for several years earning money to help support her family. They had beautiful voices and great harmonies. In her earlier years, she dedicated herself to various charitable causes, exemplifying her commitment to making the world a better place. As a member of the East Side Men's Club Ladies Auxiliary, she served as both past vice president and president, contributing significantly to the organization's efforts. Additionally, Barbara was a member of Athol Baptist Church in Mardela and past member of the Salisbury Moose Club, where her vibrant spirit touched many lives. Barbara loved music and was happiest when singing and dancing. An avid lover of the outdoors, Barbara found joy in long rides through the countryside alongside her companion, Ron. She also relished fishing and crabbing, embracing the beauty of nature. A passionate sports fan, Barbara cheered fervently for her favorite college teams, especially WVU basketball and football, and remained a loyal supporter of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Barbara's warmth extended not only to her friends and family but also to her beloved animals, particularly her cherished cat, Poncho. Professionally, she was well-regarded for her work as a buyer at The Fashion Shop in Downtown Salisbury, where she dedicated over 15 years of her life.

Barbara is survived by her loving companion of almost 30 years, Ron Hamilton; children, Terri Collins, Barbie Haley (Wade), J.R. Travers (Peggy), Steve Travers and Rick Travers (Karen), who will carry on her legacy of kindness and commitment to community service; grandchildren, Wade Haley, Blair Travers (Jenn), Andy Travers, Alex Collins, Shannon Thomas (Mark), Sherry Pinkerton (Billy), Ricky Travers, Steven Hopkins (Megan), Tara Hopkins, Kimberly Thompson, Bethany Banks (Kyle) and Ethan Wilson (Brian); many great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Edith Mergler; and her best friend and fishing buddy, Sandy Grove. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Robert Taylor and Jeff Hopkins Sr.; son, Jeffrey Hopkins; sister, Gertrude Evans; brothers, Allen Tawes and Clark Tawes; and son-in-law, Buddy Collins.

A Celebration of Life for Barbara will be held at Athol Baptist Church, 8306 Baptist Church Road, Mardela Springs, MD, on Tuesday June 30, 2026 at 1:00 where Pastor Joe Barnes will officiate.

In her honor, the family encourages donations to Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
