Anthony P.
Sweeney
September 7, 1965 – March 28, 2026
Anthony Sweeney, 60, beloved husband, son, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and brother, was called to his eternal resting place on Saturday, March 28, 2026.
Born on September 7, 1965, Anthony was raised in a loving family and was the only child of Moses and Verlie Sweeney. He graduated from Largo High School in 1983, and shortly thereafter, he served honorably in the United States Army as a Green Beret in the 82nd Airborne Division from 1983 to 1987. Anthony showed exceptional bravery when he participated in a critical mission to construct a military runway in Honduras, demonstrating his commitment to his country and service. After his time in the Army, Anthony continued to serve in the DC National Guard until 1989. He later found a fulfilling career in the transportation industry as a truck driver, working for UPS as a delivery driver and eventually entering the federal government, where he proudly served with the Architect of the Capitol beginning in 2006.
He had a deep love for football and especially enjoyed attending games, proudly cheering for his favorite team, the Washington Redskins, now known as the Commanders. He also found great joy in spending time at the beach and riding jet skis. In his leisure time, he enjoyed watching movies-particularly Star Wars, The Matrix, Planet of the Apes, The Godfather, and The Karate Kid-and his favorite television show was Seinfeld. He had a passion for music and loved listening to artists such as Jay-Z, Eminem, and the Wu-Tang Clan. He also enjoyed taking road trips and spending time cooking and grilling for family gatherings and holidays, where he was especially known for his fried turkey and fish-dishes that became a cherished Thanksgiving tradition among those who loved him.
Anthony was a loving husband to his wife, Patricia Sweeney, and a dedicated father to his five daughters, Aliyah Sweeney, Alexandra Shonekan, Aniya Irvin, Aiesha Sweeney, and Aleysha Sweeney. He was also a cherished father-in-law to Hassan Shonekan and a proud grandfather to his beloved granddaughters, Maliha, Izzy, and Elsie Shonekan. Anthony's deep connections with his family extended to his sisters, Tracey Debose and Sherita Singleton, and his brother, Jonnie (Jr) Singleton.
