Ann C. Orrell, 92, of Delmar passed away on Sunday, October 18, 2015 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born on September 4, 1923, a daughter of the late Allen and Frances Johnson. Mrs. Orrell was known to be a very strong and savvy businesswoman. She was instrumental in the opening of the Orrell Surrey Cafeteria in 1949 in Virginia Beach, as well as the Orrell Surrey Restaurants in Delmar and in Cambridge in the late 1960's. She also ran the catering department for the Delmar Convention Center for many years. She was a member of St. Stephens United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star Adah Chapter #5, both in Delmar. She is survived by two sons, Robert E. Gilmore (Ann) of Delmar, and James H. Orrell, III (Diane) of Virginia; a daughter, Carol Lynn Orrell of Delmar; grandchildren, Katherine Whitelock, Melissa Wootten, and Andrea Helton (Anthony); great-grandchildren, Trey Michael, Alyssa Marie, Aaliyah Hope, De and Terell Helton; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Orrell, Jr.; brothers, Earl and Ernest Johnson; and a sister, Marie Stafford. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 on Monday, October 26, 2015 at the Short Funeral Home, 13 E. Grove Street in Delmar. A visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service. The Reverend Phyllis Walton will officiate. Interment will follow the service at St. Stephens Cemetery in Delmar.
