Obituary

Alfred G. "Al" Thomas, 81, of Delmar, died Thursday, February 7, 2013 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury. He was born in Henderson, North Carolina, and raised in Hebron, a son of the late Haywood Thomas, Sr. and Nancy Winfree Thomas. Al proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He learned the value of hard work early on and worked as a delivery man for Feldman Brothers Furniture. After Feldman Brothers he went on to drive a delivery truck for over 30 years for ED Supply in Salisbury, a job he truly loved. At ED Supply he developed many long lasting friendships with his colleagues and customers. Even after retirement he would continue to go have coffee with the guys at the office. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor, his lovable personality and his willingness to always help those in need with a kind and generous heart. He preferred to help quietly, never looking for praise or accolades for himself. He had a true appreciation for the outdoors, especially fishing and gardening and was a true animal lover. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Martha Ann Thomas; a daughter, Lisa Bare and her husband, Chuck of Delmar; a son, Eddie Dean Thomas and his wife, Sonya of Alexandria, VA; 2 grandsons, J.C. Bare and Bryan Bare; and a brother, Richard Thomas and his wife, Daphne of Salisbury. He is also survived by several beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 4 siblings, Gladys Carey, Edward "Ned" Thomas, Haywood Thomas, Jr. and Ronnie Thomas. A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 15, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, where family and friends may call from 10:00 to 11:00. Pastor Michael Phillips will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow the services at Springhill Memory Gardens in Hebron. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802. Arrangements are being handled by Short Funeral Home of Delmar.
