Alan R. "Tex" Porter, age 76, of Salisbury, died Friday, February 2, 2007 at Coastal Hospice At the Lake in Salisbury. He was born April 19, 1930 in Rock Hall, Maryland, a son of the late Louis Howard Porter and Florence Amelia Dodson Porter. Tex, as he was known by all of his family and friends, proudly served his country in the U.S. Army for over 20 years and retired as Staff Sergeant in 1969. During his service, he fought in Vietnam and Korea and was able to travel to many places, and was stationed at Ft. Meade, MD, Ft. Bliss, TX and Germany to name a few. The Korean Service Medal, the Army of Occupation of Germany Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with a Bronze Service Star where among his decorations that he was the most proud. He also retired as a bank teller, working at a bank in El Paso, Texas and Maryland National Bank. He was a very active member of the Salisbury VFW, Post 194, where he was always willing to step in and lend a helping hand to anyone. As a member of DAV, Chapter 34, he volunteered as a driver, where he logged more than 100,000 miles assisting disabled veterans with doctor's appointments and medical needs. He was also an active member of the Salisbury American Legion, Post 64, Loyal Order of the Moose Chapter 1280, Salisbury and a member of the Military Order of the Cootie, where he was the Seam Squirrel of Pup Tent 6. He was an avid, lifelong N. Y. Yankee fan, he enjoyed reading and was a big fan of Country & Western music. For the many family and friends that knew him, his kind and gentle spirit will always remain. He is survived by his daughter, Judith Lynn Renner of Bloomington, Illinois; two grandsons, Max and Alex Renner; and a sister, Miriam Watson of Rock Hall, MD. Several nieces and nephews also survive him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Roy Alan Porter; 4 brothers, Owen, Carl, Harold and Roy Porter; and two sisters, Myrtle Perry and Evelyn Stevens. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 9, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church, 1514 Old Ocean City Road, Salisbury, MD. The Reverends Woodrow Crouse and J. Harvey Dixon will officiate. Interment with military honors will be held at Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock.
