William Thomas Calloway Jr.
May 26, 1958 - December 21, 2021
William Thomas Calloway, Jr. “Tommy”, 63, of Mardela Springs, passed away on Tuesday, December 21, 2021, at Tidal Health Peninsula Regional, surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 26, 1958, in Salisbury, a son of Jeanette Marie (Wilson) Calloway of Mardela Springs and the late William Thomas Calloway, Sr. “Billy”, who passed in 2016. Tommy graduated from Mardela Middle & High School with the class of 1976 where he completed the agriculture program. Following graduation, he became the third generation to join the family business at Hungry Neck Farms, which expanded and grew to what is currently known as Calloway Brothers. He loved everything farming related, but he was most passionate about his produce - cucumbers, squash, cantaloupes, and watermelons from start to finish. He planted, grew, harvested, packed, loaded, and then personally delivered the best product he could. Tommy drove as a truck driver for the family farm and delivered anywhere from Virginia to Massachusetts - his favorite spots being Giant food at Jessup and New Jersey. Tommy was also a third-generation commercial watermen on the Nanticoke River. He was always on the bow of the boat to stick the poles that held the nets; never leaving the hard work to someone else. He grew chickens for Perdue for over two decades and was active on the board of directors for Farmers and Planters. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Athol and a lifetime member for the North American Hunting Club. Tommy wasn’t one to let grass grow beneath his feet and when not farming he loved being outdoors; hunting, fishing, and four-wheeling and shared those passions with his grandchildren. He also loved to travel with trips to Disney or Vegas being his favorites. Once the grandchildren came along, they could talk their “Pappy” into almost anything. Before long, they had him riding roller coasters with them or cutting work short to go play, something he would never do in his younger days. Tommy had a good understanding of the stock market and loved giving stock tips to family and friends. He will be remembered as a loving and devoted son, father, Pappy, and brother who would do anything to help his family and friends. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his daughter and her family, April Marie Shiles (Kory) and Kayden, Kellen, and Kayson; his son and his family, William Thomas Calloway III (Cheryl) and Riley, Shelby, and Billie; the mother of his children, Deloris A. Calloway; a sister, Nancy C. Pope (Craig); and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Thomas Calloway, and brothers David Allen Calloway and Clayton Sterling Calloway. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, and also on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. followed by a funeral service which begins at 11:00 a.m. For those that cannot be in attendance, you can view the service live by visiting https://www.shortfh.com/obituaries/William-Calloway-3/ .
