Shirley H. Porter

Shirley Humphreys Porter, 86, of Delmar, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 4, 2022, at her home in Delmar. She was born October 26, 1935, in Salisbury, a daughter of the late Archie and Nellie (Green) Humphreys. Shirley was a long time, active member of St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church in Delmar. In her younger days, Shirley worked at Faye’s Beauty Shop in Delmar for 10 years before leaving to drive a school bus, also for 10 years. Then for the next 10 years she worked as a hostess at Dockside Murphy’s in Salisbury. Her passion was helping with Volunteers Plus at PRMC, which she did from 1970 to 1995, and spent most of her time helping in endoscopy and outpatient services. She loved all her jobs but found her most fulfilling job was being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and enjoyed supporting her family at sporting events and school functions. Horseback riding and traveling were also favorite passions of Shirley’s and she especially treasured the memories made from trips with her niece, Donna Mulkey and close friend, Ellen Dysart. She is survived by her beloved husband of 69 years, Oscar Lee “Sonny” Porter; son Chuck Porter and wife Carol of Delmar; grandchildren, Stephanie Scully and husband Rob of Laurel and Chad Porter and wife Melissa of Delmar; great grandchildren, Lauren Ruark, Justin Ruark, Marley Ruark and Cadyn Porter; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by siblings, Florence, Doris, Gladys, Leonard and Lee. A graveside service will be held on Friday, February 11, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Cemetery in Delmar. The Reverend Phyllis Walton will officiate.
