Obituary

Samuel "Sam" W. Bare, 83 of Delmar, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and patriot, formerly of Lewes, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 1, 2024 at his home. He was born on August 13, 1940, one of 10 children of the late John and Iva (Gordy) Bare. Sam proudly served his country in the Delaware National Guard for several years before enlisting in the US Army, where he was stationed in Okinawa from 1961 to 1965. His time in the Army prepared him well for a fulfilling career in law enforcement. From 1969 to 1983 he proudly served as an officer for the Lewes Police Department, where he made many friends who he considered extended family. In his younger days Sam was an avid Harley Davidson rider and was a member of the Lewes Motorcycle Club. Sam loved the outdoors, was an avid fisherman, and was very skilled working on and building computers. Those that knew Sam knew his passion for his country and he enjoyed conversations about politics and the state of our country. Sam's family would like to give a special thanks to Lisa and Ellen who were special nieces and caregivers. He is survived by daughters, who he was extremely proud of, Sharon Slater and husband, Fred of Milton and Susan Barto and husband, Doug of Palm Bay, Florida; grandchildren, Katelyn Payson, Jacob Slater, Louie Attalla and Lorna Attalla; great-grandchild, Bentley; brothers, Leo Bare of Gumboro and Jesse Bare and wife, Myra of Frankford; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Bernadine King, Lloyd Warfield, Jack Bare, Charles Bare, Freddie Bare, Donald Bare and an infant brother, Joe Bert Bare. A memorial service with military honors will be held on Friday, March 22, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:00 to 11:00.
