George B. McKelvey

DELMAR- George B. McKelvey, 87, of Delmar, died Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. He was born on July 4, 1924 in Marion, North Carolina, a son of the late James Albert McKelvey and Martha Jane (Hunter) McKelvey. George proudly served his country in the US Army-Air Corps during World War II. After his return from the war, he worked for many years as an auto mechanic for the old Parkway Motors in Salisbury. He also worked raising chickens, a job he worked with his wife for 32 years. His family and his church were most important to him. His membership at Parkway Church of God in Salisbury spanned over 50 years. He was very active and loyal to his church where in the past he has served as Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, song leader and was a member of the board for many years. He was great with his hands and could fix almost anything, loved the outdoors and working in his vegetable garden. He is survived by his wife of 66 ½ years, Edna R. (Phillips) McKelvey; eight children and their spouses, Maxwell George McKelvey and Pat of Delmar, Gloria M. White and Tommy of Delmar, Joyce M. Adkins and Raymond of Parsonsburg, Deborah F. King and Alton of Laurel, Ronald B. McKelvey and Cheryl of Delmar, Barry A. McKelvey and Kimberly of Laurel, Michelle M. Riddle and James of Millsboro and Michael S. McKelvey of Delmar; 18 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; brothers, Joseph McKelvey of New Jersey, Phillip McKelvey of East New Market and Paul McKelvey of New Jersey; and sisters, Addie Dabney of North Carolina and Irene Malcolm of Salisbury. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas McKelvey and a sister, Melva Whaley. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, where family and friends may call from 10:00 to 11:00. The Reverend Raymond Crowley will officiate. Interment will follow the services at Springhill Memory Gardens in Hebron.
